Here
is the basic procedure to start and operate the Model T
Ford : Lift up on the floorboard
and turn on the gas lever (coming from
the
tank). Reach into the cockpit and retard the
spark
by pushing up on the left stalk (this step is
important).
Set the gas lever by pushing down on
the
right stalk a half-inch. Set the handbrake. Turn
the
brass knob on the right side of the instrument
panel
a quarter-turn clockwise (rich mixture).
Push
in the crank until it connects with the engine.
Give
it a yank to make sure it turns.
Now, pull out the choke wire twice to prime the
engine.
Go back to the cockpit and turn the
ignition
switch from off to "Battery." Go back
around
to the front of the car, pull up on the crank
handle
clockwise one, two or three times. Yes! It
starts.
Not with a loud noise and shake, but a low, sure
putt-putt. Finally, go back inside and
advance
the spark timing by moving the left stalk
about
1 in. down, switch the ignition from "Battery"
to
"Magneto," and rest for about 5 minutes while
the
engine warms up. Return the choke to its
normal
setting when the engine is running
smoothly.
And away you go.
